A healthy mind is one that takes care of itself. It thinks thoughts that keep it safe. Those safe thoughts then create safe emotions that allow us to be our best selves.
Mental highs are one of the M&M’s that help me take care of my mind.
What IS a mental high? It’s when you truly FEEL the joy that comes from seeing the beauty around you or the people you call friends. It’s when you’re overcome with love and faith. It’s when you feel empowered and like you can do anything!
Sometimes these tender moments happen on their own. Other times they need a little encouragement. Music is one of those kick-starters.
Music rocks for soooo many reasons. But I want to suggest one way music can make your life rock that you might not have considered yet. Music can actually help change the way you look at life. Listening to songs with uplifting lyrics and melodies can give your feelings a healthy boost and magnify your positive emotions. That’s why movies have soundtracks, to enhance the mood of the scenes we’re watching.
Did you know the same scene can have an entirely different feeling by just changing the music? Or not having any at all? If you don’t believe me, watch Brain Pop’s episode on senses!
So if your life isn’t looking like a story you want to be part of, try changing the soundtrack. Put on something happy! Peppy! Make a playlist and have it ready. YOU have the power to decide what goes in your mind. So give it the best energy you can find. Give it positive, upbeat music. If you elevate your thoughts, you are bound to rise up too.

The rest of this menu will go through each part of S.M.I.L.E., another help for having mental highs, using excerpts from my book, Learning to S.M.I.L.E. Again: 5 Simple Steps Toward Joy which you can learn more about here. I also have an upbeat music list and photo galleries showing ways I’ve used this life-changing acronym in everyday life. I don’t use the term “life-changing” lightly either. I know taking the time to deliberately make mental highs didn’t just change my life, it saved it. It freed me from the grip of anxiety, depression, and feelings of worthlessness. I believe it can for you too.
